These walk-around photos were taken in one of Flygvapenmuseum's storage facilities in 2019. They show a Saab JA 37 Viggen, individual number 37449, coded 49 and marked with the insignia of F 4 Frösön — a aircraft with a unique distinction: it is the very last Viggen ever delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces. Delivered in June 1990, it marked the end of a production run of 149 JA 37s and 329 Viggens of all variants combined, spanning twenty years of manufacturing at Saab in Linköping.
The JA 37 was a substantially different aircraft from the earlier Viggen variants, sharing the basic airframe concept but redesigned around the interceptor mission. It received a more powerful RM 8B engine, a reinforced airframe, an Ericsson PS-46/A pulse-Doppler radar, and the unique distinction of being the only Viggen variant to carry a fixed gun — a 30 mm Oerlikon KCA automatic cannon. Individual 37449 was subsequently modified to D standard in 1999 and later to DI standard, the final and most capable configuration of the JA 37, giving it improved electronics and the ability to operate alongside JAS 39 Gripen and in international contexts — hence the I for interoperabel. Plans existed to keep 37449 airworthy as a flying veteran, but this did not come to pass. It was instead registered as a museum object and placed in Flygvapenmuseum's collection.
