These walk-around photos were taken at IWM Duxford in 2018. They show a McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR.2, serial XV474, the RAF's British-built variant of the legendary Phantom. While the American F-4J at Duxford represents the US Navy original, the FGR.2 was a substantially modified version fitted with Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans and British avionics — making the UK the only nation outside the US to develop its own Phantom variant. The FGR.2 served initially in the ground attack and reconnaissance roles with RAF Germany before transitioning to the air defence role as the English Electric Lightning was phased out, and went on to defend the Falkland Islands following the 1982 conflict.
XV474 was delivered to the RAF in June 1969 and had one of the longest and most varied careers of any British Phantom, serving with No. 2, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 56 and finally No. 74 Squadron before retirement in October 1992. It was notably the first RAF Phantom to be repainted in the three-tone air defence grey colour scheme. It is displayed at Duxford in the markings of No. 74 Squadron — the Tigers — the last unit it served with.
